The last human is fishing [INCOMPLETE]

Posted : 6 years, 11 months ago on 5 June 2017 03:54 (A review of The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human)

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human (AQ for short) is a "boss rush" sidescrolling metroidvania where you shoot marine stuff in a submarine in a world where all humans have died but one...

In this game, you are an astronaut sent to space in order to find a new habitable planet, unfortunately, you fail and when you arrive back home everything became Atlantis and the human race has gone extinct.

Now you must explore this subaquatic world for the sake of progress (Since there isn't a defined objective other than "keep playing until you eventually reach the ending") finding tools and upgrades that will help you along the way, while occasionally finding holo-tapes that will shed some light onto the "Where´s" and "How´s" of the extinction of the human race.

The tools that allow you to progress are usually behind a boss which death is required so you can go on, those same tools will also allow you to not only reach new areas you couldnt reach before, but several upgrades to enhance your ship.

I am going to go straight to the point, the main problem of the game are the bosses, not because all fights are bad (Some certainly are) but because most of them are pretty flawed, I will proceed to explain my point quickly talking about every boss:

Worm (Boss 1):

This is a good initial fight, not too easy, not too hard and serves as a perfect introduction for both the pace and main gameplay (Chill during explorations and pretty fast during the battles) allowing you to perfectly adequate to the game's controls. The only problem I can think of is this one: Unlike the every other fight, you can't finish it right away because at a certain point in The Worm's health bar, he will be invincible, (this has a reason since the log entry would be otherwise incoherent and the Worm's corpse needs to open the path on a specific point) which is a bit annoying, not a big mistake but something I wanted to note.

Sadly, on a second playthrough (Assuming you got all the upgrades) this fight is easy as hell and the "error" mentioned above is much more noticeable.

Fathers (Boss 2)

This fight teaches you to keep your distance (Something you will have to do during all the boss fights) and I say it's pretty good, I don't have much else to say here. Again, on a second playthrough, this fight becomes incredibly easy. This fight gives you an incredibly useful tool, the saw

Tranquil (Boss 3)

Tedious and boring are the only things I can say from this fight, you are supposed to cut the tentacles of this octopus (With your newly adquired saw) in order to incapacitate it while allowing you to reach it's weak points, it's an awfully long fight and it's second phase it's even worse because he can insta-kill you without warning (Out of the blue he can shake it's tentacles in a heart beat while shrieking, which will insta kill you since there is no way to telegraph this attack or even avoid it once it begun, so you have to be constantle away from this guy)

I understand the base idea for this guy, this was supposed to be a Krokomire-like fight where you are supposed to be the bad guy and stuff (I mean, he is the only boss that shouts when you attack him) but it doesnt work on mechanical levels since the fight prolongates too long and it has a severe incoherence. The dude shouts when you attack his eye but not when you chop off his tentacles? If he shouted when I chopped his tentacles off it would be more understandable and I could pass this fight since the whole fight would be a reminding of how we are harming an innocent creature just because he is on the way (Of course without exagerating and making it and edge festival) but the "muh you are bad dude" only happens at the end of a tedious fight (90% fighting a tedious fight, 10% actually harming the creature and showing it's suffering)

In Krokomire, you were being constantly reminded that the creature was suffering thanks to your fault (You could observe it on it's behavior and constant screams) here you are only reminded of this at the end of the fight, hence why it doesn't work.

On post-game, this fight is much more fast than the original fight since you count with torpedoes that insta-harm the tentacle and allow you to go and chop the tentacle and it's even more easy than the original fight. Not even the reward is that great, it's just an useless shield that can only prove handful on very counted occasions.

Forgotten (Boss 4)

Now THIS is a proper fight, a very thrilling fight against a giant undead fish. Quick-hard to avoid movements that you can telegraph, a handful of easily avoidable instakills that can catch a player off-guard (These intakills are of course, obvious, if they looked like a normal attack rather than an attack you know it's going to kill you, I would condemn them rather than celebrating them) the only problem I could remark is a specific attack which goes against the pace of the game (An incredibly slow attack that slowly follows you and you can easily avoid, this wouldnt be a problem if the fish was not invincible during this long attack, it's even much more noticeable during post game) which is supposed to be incredibly fast during boss fights (Besides, this fight goes against a fundamental boss fight principle, "The lenght of a boss fight depends on the skill of the player")

But overall, this is a pretty good fight, still keeping part of it's difficulty during post-game. Besides, he gives you an essential item in the game, an item that lets you dodge

False Light (Boss 5)

Another meh fight, esentially this guy appears out of nowhere (You can easily know where he will appear since he will be the only source of light) and starts to attract piranhas, this fight is incredibly easy at this point, his weak point (The eyes) is incredibly obvious and easy to target, if you got the Triple arpoons at this point, the fight will only last 30 seconds, if you dont, the fight is still ridiculously easy, you can easily kill the piranhas/ shoot his eye. It will give you a lamp at death

Chain Gang (Boss 6)

This could be an amazing fight, the best one in the game, if it wasnt for a tiny detail.

Defiler (Boss 7)

Parasite (Boss 8)

Experiment (Boss 9)

Heart of the City (Boss 10)

Guardian (Boss 11)
